Turner Construction Company, the largest contractor in the United States by revenue, has entered the equipment rental market through the launch of First Equipment Company (FEC), a wholly owned subsidiary announced in early January 2026.
The move represents a strategic shift toward vertical integration of supply chain services, positioning the construction giant to compete directly with traditional rental companies while streamlining operations for its extensive network of trade contractors.
FEC is not an entirely new concept for Turner—the company has been piloting the integrated equipment and site services model on select projects, particularly large-scale advanced technology builds, where it demonstrated measurable operational benefits.
With the official launch, Turner is expanding FEC’s reach to support projects across the United States and making services available to more than 40,000 trade contractors who work on Turner jobs annually. Additionally, FEC will offer rental services to external general contractors and trade contractors nationwide, marking Turner’s entry into the broader commercial rental market.
Comprehensive Equipment and Site Services
The subsidiary centralizes procurement of a wide range of construction resources, from heavy machinery and operating equipment to temporary power systems, lighting, office and restroom trailers, fencing, and site controls.
By consolidating these services under one organization staffed by experienced equipment professionals embedded locally in project markets, FEC manages sourcing, logistics, administration, and issue resolution.
This approach reduces administrative burdens on project teams and trade partners, allowing them to focus more directly on execution, safety, and quality.
“First Equipment Company is a strategic investment in our ability to deliver projects more efficiently,” said Shannon Hines, Senior Vice President at Turner Construction.
“By supporting the contractors working on our projects with a consistent, streamlined equipment experience, we help improve productivity in the field—benefiting our project teams and, ultimately, our clients.”
Part of Broader Delivery Transformation Strategy
FEC joins a growing portfolio of specialized subsidiaries and services that Turner has developed to enhance project delivery capabilities. These initiatives include xPL Offsite for prefabrication, SourceBlue for supply chain management, the Turner Accelerated Payment Program, and the Turner Engineering Group, which serves as the contractor’s internal architecture and engineering arm.
The company has also been expanding its self-perform operations and recently partnered with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT Enterprise across its workforce.
Josh Ehlers, National Manager of First Equipment Company, emphasized the subsidiary’s alignment with Turner’s commitment to continuous improvement:
“FEC reflects our commitment to continuously improving how we serve our clients and partners. By enhancing efficiency at the project level, we’re strengthening outcomes for everyone involved” .
Industry Implications and Competitive Positioning
The launch signals a broader trend in the construction industry where tier-one general contractors are evolving into vertically integrated service platforms .
By leveraging enterprise buying power while operating as a dedicated equipment entity, FEC offers potential competitive advantages in an industry facing persistent labor shortages, material cost inflation, and compressed schedules.
For procurement professionals, the model provides lessons in category management for site services and rentals, while trade contractors may benefit from simplified resource access and main contractors could secure enhanced loyalty and efficiency advantages .
The equipment rental offerings span multiple categories including safety and signage, survey and layout equipment, temporary lighting and power systems, tools such as air compressors and nailers, and vehicles and trailers.
This comprehensive service menu positions FEC to serve as a one-stop solution for construction site needs, potentially reducing the number of vendor relationships project teams must manage.
As construction projects grow increasingly complex and timelines tighten, Turner’s strategic move into equipment rental through FEC represents a case study in supply chain integration designed to power project success while creating new revenue streams beyond traditional construction services.
